Overtime rate: –

How it works
  • Overtime rate = hourly rate × 1.5 (or your multiplier).
  • Regular pay = hours up to 40 × rate. Overtime pay = hours over 40 × overtime rate.
  • Biweekly? Each week is counted on its own. Weeks are never averaged.

How do you calculate overtime pay?

Multiply your overtime hours by your hourly rate times 1.5, then add that to your regular pay for the first 40 hours of the week.

Say you earn $20 an hour and work 46 hours. Regular pay is 40 × $20 = $800. Overtime is 6 × $30 = $180. Gross pay is $980. For the full rules, including state daily overtime, read how to calculate overtime pay.

How does overtime work on a biweekly paycheck?

Overtime is counted per workweek, so a 50-hour week and a 30-hour week earn 10 overtime hours even though the two weeks total 80.

This is the most common way overtime goes missing. If your employer averages the two weeks, you lose the premium on those 10 hours. Switch the calculator to Biweekly to see both weeks side by side.

What is double time and who gets it?

Double time is twice your hourly rate; federal law does not require it, but California does after 12 hours in a day, and some employers pay it for holidays.

Enter only the hours your employer pays at 2× in the double-time box. They are taken out of the regular and overtime counts so nothing is paid twice.

Can an app track overtime for me?

Yes. Timelog, our iPhone app, splits each shift into base and overtime hours as you clock in and out.

Timelog applies overtime after a daily threshold you set (for example 1.5× after 8 hours a day) and estimates pay before tax. It does not apply the 40-hour weekly rule automatically and it is not payroll or tax software, so use this calculator to check weekly overtime.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate time and a half?

Multiply your hourly rate by 1.5. At $20 an hour, time and a half is $30 an hour. Then multiply that overtime rate by the number of overtime hours and add it to your regular pay.

How is overtime calculated on a biweekly paycheck?

Each week is counted on its own. Under federal law, 50 hours in week one and 30 hours in week two is 10 hours of overtime, even though the two weeks add up to 80. The calculator works out each week separately and never averages them.

When do you get double time?

Federal law does not require double time. Some states do (California pays 2× after 12 hours in a workday), and some employers pay it for holidays or long shifts. Enter those hours in the double-time box and they are paid at twice your rate.

Is overtime after 40 hours or 8 hours a day?

The federal rule is hours over 40 in a workweek. A few states, such as California, Alaska and Nevada, also have daily overtime rules. Change the threshold if your employer or state uses a different number.

Does this show my take-home pay?

No. The results are gross pay before tax and deductions. Check them against the gross figure and hours on your pay stub.
